Maria Montessori believed that
as children develop security, safety and a feeling of trust
on their way to independence, the message they are trying
to convey to us through their actions and words is:
"Help me do it by myself".
A Montessori Toddler Environment can be seen
as a place in which two basic needs of developing child from
eighteen months to 3 years of age are met.
One need is the
bonded relationship between adult and child and the other
need is support from a growing sense of self through observation
and a prepared environment. The Toddler Environment has children
from 18 months to 3 years of age. Order, simplicity, and aesthetics
can characterize these environments in order to meet the basic
needs of young children.
When a baby becomes a toddler, the physical
environment takes increasing significance. A toddler needs
to constantly be moving. Discovery, exploration and independence
are developed through free play and socialization. As the
child moves around and explores his environment, he gains
confidence and self-worth. When he accomplishes many tasks
successfully, he is then able to say:
“I did it myself”.
A toddler still needs to retreat for warmth and nurturing
reassurance.
Safety must be ensured in order to allow freedom
of movement, exploration, cognitive and motor development
through interaction with the environment.
Maria Montessori tells us that coordination of movements is
developmentally planned and that both energies ( mental and
physical) must be working in harmony in order for positive
personalities to develop in children.
The Toddler Environment
is a constructive developmental period in and of itself.
It is a “Birthing Place” in which
a toddler experiences great achievements. Every single activity
such as eating or diapering is considering a valuable “Learning
Opportunity” as there is a very important purpose
behind it.
